Independence Celebration at Sun and Stars College
As Nigeria turned 63 on Sunday, October 1st, 2023, it was marked in advance in the premises of Sun and Stars College on Friday, September 29th, 2023.
On that fateful Friday, staff and students turned up to school with touch of green and white outfits in honour of the colours of the Nigerian flag. Class activities were held from 8:00- 11:00am in order to observe the Nigerian independence for the rest of the school hours.
At exactly 11:00am, all students assembled in the school hall with the coordination of the teachers. The event started with an open prayer then the National anthem and pledge which were led by two sonorous junior and senior students. Next, one of the English teaching staff, exhorted the audience on “the relevance of the past heroes’ labour”. She spoke on how the sacrificial service of these heroes who caused a triumph for Nigeria from the agonized slavery period and encouraged the young people to use the advantages they have to help the lives of others and to keep believing in Nigeria because until one believes in a nation, it would be hard to prosper in that nation.
Thereafter, some students were called up to briefly speak on the biography of past and present heroes. The past heroes included Lt. Sir. Amadu Bello, Lt. Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Lt. Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe. The present heroes spoke on were Mrs. Okonjo Iweala; a distinguished former minister of Finance and present head of World Bank, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN); Legal Practitioner and Human Right Activist and Mrs. Aisha Yusuf; Human Right Activist and one of the leaders of the never forgotten ‘EndSars’ protest movement which took place on October 20, 2020. Images of these patriots were revealed on a wide projected screen for better understanding for the students.
After the speeches, came the jolly section of the program as music played for students as they danced and had a good. Also, item 7 wasn’t left out. It was indeed a memorable day!
